The Scion tC five-passenger "coupe" (it's actually a hatchback) looks sharp and is highly customizable with a wide variety of personalization options, but testers say it's not as fun to drive as sportier economy cars like the 2010 Mazda3 (Base MSRP $15,295 to $22,000). The 2010 tC remains basically unchanged since 2008; see our page on the 2008 Scion tC (*Est. $15,300 to 17,800) for a detailed review.
Fuel economy is below average for an economy car, at 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway/23 mpg combined with the five-speed manual gearbox or 21 mpg city/29 mpg highway/24 mpg combined with the four-speed automatic. A dealer-installed supercharger can be added to the 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine to boost power.
Unlike most economy cars, the Scion tC doesn't offer electronic stability control. It does include antilock brakes and front, side, curtain and driver-knee airbags as standard equipment, however. Crash-test results are mixed. The 2010 tC performs well in government tests, earning perfect 5-star ratings in side crashes and for protecting the driver in a frontal crash, with 4 stars for frontal-crash passenger protection and rollover resistance. However, at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the tC fails to earn the highest rating of "good" in any crash test. Its front- and side-crash ratings are "acceptable," but its rear-crash protection is only "marginal". The tC's rollover roof strength has not been tested.
The 2010 Scion tC's base MSRP is $17,100.
