Breaking it down

Wet or dry, a close, comfortable shave. Most users agree that the Panasonic ES-LA63-S Arc 4 offers a close, comfortable shave, especially if you have sensitive skin. We even found a couple of comments from men who suffered from ingrown hair but say that with this shaver, it's no longer an issue. Most experts are also impressed with the performance of the ES-LA63-S. At Electric-Shaver-Guide.com, Tyler Stokes tests the Panasonic ES-LA93-K (Est. $170) -- the same razor, but in black instead of silver, and packaged with a cleaning stand that draws mixed feedback -- and finds that "If you spend an extra minute going over certain areas a few times, you can get super smooth results. Even running your fingers against the grain is smooth."

Ease of use

Comfortable in your hand. Most say that the Panasonic ES-LA63-S is comfortable to hold. A rubberized coating on the back of the shaver helps you keep your grip on it, even with wet hands. A few experts and users say that the top of the shaver is a little too bulky, but testing says that it does a good job tackling areas that pose a problem for other shavers. "While many electric razors make it difficult to shave the chin area or jaw line, this one provides thorough results without any difficulty," says John Carlsen at TopTenReviews.com. Most say that the trimmer feature works well. One issue is that the run time between charges is short -- even shorter than the 45 minutes that the manufacturer claims, some users say. That's complicated by the fact that the razor can't be used corded (for obvious safety reasons since this model is designed so that it can be taken into the shower) and there's no quick-charge feature.

No news is (mostly) good news. Expert and user opinions about the noise level of the Panasonic ES-LA63-S (and ES-LA93-K) are split right down the middle. The ES-LA63-S is one of many shavers to receive a Very Good rating on this point from a major consumer research organization. Many users agree, but some others pointedly complain about the noise levels.

Short return period. Most major-brand electric shavers are covered by a two-year limited warranty, and the Panasonic ES-LA63-S is no exception. Most also offer a money-back return period to allow users time to for their face to adjust to the new shaver. However, among major makers, Panasonic's return period of 30 days -- while sufficient, most say -- is also the shortest (in contrast, Philips Norelco offers 45 days, while Braun's return period is 60 days). Complaints about short run times between charges are the most negative we see, though others gripe that the display on their razor failed. Customer service gets mixed reviews. Some praise responsiveness when issues arise, but others are sorely disappointed by Panasonic's efforts in that regard.

Although this site's presentation reeks of direct sales tactics, the author posts lengthy, comprehensive and ultimately very helpful reviews to YouTube that have us convinced of his authenticity. He selects the Panasonic ES-LA93-K shaver as the best wet/dry electric shaver and offers a mostly positive, but still balanced, analysis of its performance. Elsewhere on the site he calls the ES-LA63-S the Best Value for Money shaver.

TopTenReviews.com also tests the ES-LA93-K (identical to the ES-LA63-K save for color and the inclusion of a cleaning stand) and places it in third place among the electric shavers it reviews. Testing reveals that the Panasonic provided "an excellent shave."

More than 1,950 users give the ES-LA63-S a 4.3-star overall rating. Most like this shaver's performance, but complaints about short battery life, a dodgy LCD display and assorted other ills, along with customer service that's a bit hit or miss, can be found.
