Philips Norelco Shaver 9300 Review

Philips Norelco 9300 Review
Bottom Line

The Philips Norelco Shaver 9300 rotary shaver uses an updated cutting system that draws praise for its close, quiet shave. This is a wet/dry electric razor that can also be used in the shower or with shaving cream and lotions for those that prefer that style of shaving. A cleaning/charger stand is included, but its use isn't mandatory -- a good thing since that's the part of the Shaver 9300 that comes in for the most complaints.

Breaking it down

Closest shave yet from a rotary electric razor. With the 9000 series shavers, including the Shaver 9300, Norelco Philips introduced a new cutting system with V-shaped rather than flat blades that cut closer to the skin. Coupled with other improvements, such as heads that can move in eight directions to better follow the contour of your face (other Philips Norelco rotary shavers move in five or fewer directions), the 9300 shaves closer than any other rotary razor -- 30 percent closer the company says. While some question the accuracy of that number, most agree that the shave is both close and comfortable. A step up model, the Philips Norelco Shaver 9700 (Est. $300), is also available but other than some display enhancement and a different color, the razors are very similar and will perform the same.

Ease of use

Shaver good, cleaning stand bad. The Philips Norelco Shaver 9300 is lightweight and comfortable to hold, users say. However, many that otherwise like the shaver have gripes about the cleaning/charging stand that accompanies it. Adam Clark Estes at Gizmodo, who says that the Shaver 9300 gave him the "closest shave of my life," says to skip using the cleaning stand altogether, bluntly calling it "a piece of crap" that's poorly designed, unintuitive to use, and prone to sloshing the cleaning solution. User reviews that complain about the stand failing are also easy to find. Fortunately, the shaver is easy to clean manually, and unlike some other Philips Norelco shavers, such as those in the now discontinued 8000 series, you don't need the stand to charge the razor, just plug the power cord into the shaver itself. That's a boon for those who want to use the shaver on the road. For those who want to use the shaver in the shower, or with lotions or creams, the Shaver 9300 is waterproof.

Rotary razors are relatively quiet. No expert reviewer has tested or rated the Philips Norelco Shaver 9300 for noise. However, earlier models have fared very well in that regard. User reviews addressing noise generally say that the shaver is relatively quiet, especially compared to foil electric shavers.

No red flags, except for the stand. The Philips Norelco Shaver 9300 is covered by a two-year warranty and a 45-day money-back guarantee. Most of the complaints regarding failure we spotted revolved around the stand, rather than the razor. Customer service fares better in user comments than what we've seen in the past with other Norelco Philips models, and most owners that do run into issues seem satisfied.

A Razor With V-Shaped Blades Gave Me the Closest Shave of My Life, Adam Clark Estes, Aug. 1, 2014

The author hates shaving, but adds that the Shaver 9300 is "a real pleasure to use." The experience of getting a comfortable, close shave is only slightly lessened by the cleaning stand that's anything but a pleasure -- skip it altogether Adam Clark Estes advises.
