Testing published in dental journals consistently say the pulsating and oscillating brush motion of the Braun Oral-B ProfessionalCare 7000 series of electric toothbrushes, which includes the 7850, excels at plaque removal. The 7000 series electric toothbrushes combine pulsation (in-and-out) and oscillation (side-to-side) movement. Experts say that whether you use a manual or electric brush, you need two minutes of brushing, and the Braun Oral-B ProfessionalCare 7850 has a two-minute timer and stops the bristle movement if you're pressing too hard. The battery can go about 12 days between charges. If you want something cheaper, the Braun Oral-B Vitality (*est. $20) gets good reviews but has only one kind of motion (spinning).

We found several clinical studies published in the Journal of Dentistry – just be aware that the studies were commissioned by Procter & Gamble, maker of Oral-B. The findings, however, were not appreciably different from a German study published in the Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics or a review in Men's Health magazine. We found about 60 user reviews on Amazon.com, almost all of them positive. Consumer Reports has skimpy coverage of electric toothbrushes, rating only four, and none in the Braun Oral-B ProfessionalCare 7000 series.
