Bait and Switch, December 26, 2008This was at the local drug store for almost less than the two AA batteries it came with, and it is one of the only battery-operated brushes that included not only dual bristles but plastic scrubbing tabs… that do wonders. Consumer Reports found it to be one of the only electric brushes (batteries or rechargeable) that was more effective than normal brushes. I was sold. I bought refill brushes as well, that snap in. THEN they changed the design. Despite AMPLE room for AA batteries, they added internal spacers to switch it to AAA batteries. Formerly it lasted a couple of weeks. Now it lasts about four days...and it LEAKS water into the battery cavity. The only way I can run it a week is to use lithium batteries, but they are AAA so your battery cost goes up suddenly. I notice most stores are now "out of stock" of this item. Gee, I wonder why? It could either be because electric toothbrushes are really hard to manufacture, or because people stopped buying the new version.

Good Housekeeping doesn't say how many toothbrushes are tested, but it gives awards to the Crest Spinbrush Pro, Oral-B CrossAction Power and Colgate Motion (most comfortable handle, good effectiveness for the price).

Editors at Spot Shopping Guide compare the Crest Spinbrush and the Colgate Motion, preferring the latter because its dual brushes rotate faster, its front brush reaches between the teeth more effectively, it's easier to switch on and off and it's cheaper.
