Clinical studies indicate that Oral-B's triple-action brush head -- which rotates, oscillates and pulses -- cleans teeth more effectively than other types of electric toothbrushes. The Oral-B ProfessionalCare line is popular with experts and users, who praise its two-minute timer and built-in pressure sensor, which warns users when they are brushing too hard. Reviewers also commend the battery life, lasting up to two weeks between charges.

The step-up Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 with SmartGuide (*Est. $130) adds a separate wireless display that shows your brushing time and remaining battery life and signals when you are brushing too hard; it also functions as a clock. If you prefer a basic electric toothbrush, the Oral-B Vitality (*Est. $25) is also highly rated by experts and users. Oral-B also makes two less expensive brushes, the ProfessionalCare 1000 (*Est. $65) and the ProfessionalCare 3000 (*Est. $80), which lack an LCD readout.

We didn't find many professional reviews for the Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 4000, but we found abundant praise for its predecessor, the Oral-B Triumph, which was nearly identical. The most reliable review comes from ConsumerReports.org, where the Triumph is tested and compared to nine other toothbrushes. The clinical studies we found presented testing data well, but they were funded by Procter & Gamble, the manufacturer of Oral-B toothbrushes. User reviews at Amazon.com give insight into real-world experiences.
