Electric toothbrush for smaller mouths

- Excellent cleaning ability
- Two-minute timer
- Gentler than Oral-B electric toothbrushes
- Price
- Noisy
Studies show that rotating/oscillating/pulsating brushes do a better job of cleaning your teeth than sonic toothbrushes (which use a side-to-side sweeping motion), but experts say that the Sonicare FlexCare is still an excellent electric toothbrush. Additionally, users say the Sonicare is gentler than Oral-B toothbrushes, yet prevents cavities just as well. The FlexCare comes with two brush heads, one standard-size and one compact. Reviewers say that the compact head is perfect for users with smaller mouths and is better at getting to hard-to-reach spaces. The manufacturer claims that the Sonicare FlexCare sonic electric toothbrush vibrates less than its predecessors, but several reviewers say it is loud nonetheless.
Sonicare builds in an easy-start feature for new users, which eases them into using a powered toothbrush by gently increasing its power over 14 uses. (This particular function can be deactivated.) Sonicare also offers the FlexCare with a built-in sanitizer (*Est. $170) for users worried about germs, but we didn't find any clinical testing to back up the need for this. If you prefer the feel of a round, rotating brush head, experts suggest the Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 4000 (*Est. $125).
We found the most reliable review for the Sonicare FlexCare in the Journal of Clinical Dentistry, where a clinical study shows the toothbrush to be highly effective at removing surface stains from teeth. Although their tests are not as scientific in nature, Good Housekeeping and The Wall Street Journal also compare several electric toothbrushes. User reviews at Amazon.com and Drugstore.com are excellent sources to evaluate real-world use and durability.
