NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 Pro

Best-value elliptical trainer

Pros
  • Good value
  • Lots of features
  • Adjustable stride length
  • Powered incline
Cons
  • Durability is iffy

If you can't spend much, experts say the NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 Pro elliptical trainer is a good value among budget elliptical trainers. The updated 2012 model has a number of features you won't find on most budget elliptical models, including an adjustable stride length (from 20 to 23 inches), automated incline and built-in speakers for an MP3 player. Other features include 24 levels of resistance, workout fans and a handgrip heart-rate monitor. Reviewers praise the AudioStrider 990 Pro's overall value, and most users also like how the automated incline, which adjusts up to 40 degrees, gives them more variety in their workouts. They also report that this elliptical is stable while exercising, and most reviewers say it operates quietly. The 990 Pro is also iFit Live compatible (*Est. $10/month subscription fee), which allows you to download new exercise programs, race against Facebook friends and track your workouts -- all using your home Wi-Fi network.

However, we did see a number of durability complaints, which is not unusual for a budget elliptical trainer. Problems vary from deteriorating rollers to faulty electronics modules. The NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 Pro's warranty has improved; it still comes with a lifetime frame warranty and one year of labor coverage, but the parts warranty has increased from one year to three. Nonetheless if you can afford to spend a bit more, the Sole E35 (*Est. $1,300) gets the best reviews overall and has a slightly better warranty.

ConsumerReports.org conducted the best review of the NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 Pro in 2011. The elliptical was subjected to a number of tests and evaluated on various criteria, including ease of use and construction quality. The experts at TreadmillDoctor.com and Fitness-Equipment-Source.com also offer useful reviews, although their testing is not as systematic as that of ConsumerReports.org. Sears.com is the best spot for user reviews on this elliptical trainer.
