Bottom line

Precor pioneered the first elliptical trainers and continues to set the bar high. If solid, high-quality machinery with a great warranty and customer service is more important to you than non-essential features like speakers or a fan, the Precor EFX 5.33 is one to look at. It's a smooth, easy-to-use machine with adjustable stride length to fit multiple users.

Performance

All about performance. The Precor EFX 5.33 has the largest footprint of any elliptical we cover, measuring 84 inches by 31 inches. Its large surface area and 240-pound weight help it achieve what experts describe as the smoothest, most stable motion of any elliptical brand. Reviewers say it is "solidly built, nicely machined, and very heavy."

The EFX 5.33's CrossRamp incline technology is patented by Precor and is often imitated. Although its 15-to-30-degree incline gradient is shorter than other high-end ellipticals, stride length can be adjusted between 21 and 23 inches. The Precor EFX 5.33 has 20 levels of quiet, reliable magnetic resistance that draw nothing but praise from reviewers.

Ease of use

Few features, but well built. The Precor EFX 5.33 has few non-essential features, placing the focus on high-end, commercial-level machinery instead. The center console is LED rather than LCD, and this elliptical has no built-in speakers or fans. That said, reviewers report that the 5.33's incline CrossRamp works well, and it comes with a total of 10 preprogrammed workouts. There are no handlebar controls, and the handgrip heart-rate monitors are on the stationary handles, not the moving handlebars. The 5.33 has a heart-rate interactive program and is compatible with wireless heart-rate monitors, although you have to provide your own chest-strap monitor.

Durability

Made to last. Precor cut out the extra accessories and features for the EFX 5.33 to focus on high-quality, durable components that provide enduring performance. Consumers like the idea, and we didn't see any complaints about durability issues. One Amazon.com user who assembled his elliptical himself says, "At the end of assembly, I was impressed; they really did use high-quality materials, and the component build quality is impressive." Another writes that "It's a great, sturdy machine... I don't see a way for normal use to break it."

Customer service

A well-protected piece of equipment. Precor puts a lot of faith in the EFX 5.33 series, protecting it with what may be the best warranty in the industry: lifetime frame coverage, 10 years on parts (including wear items) and one year for labor. Although users don't have much to say about customer service for the EFX 5.33, feedback on other Precor elliptical trainers suggests that you can expect more than satisfactory service. As one customer puts it in a post to Amazon.com, "they left me with the definite impression that they care about their customers."
