by Justin T. ("Oshburg")
Justin T., also known as "Oshburg," is an energy-drink fan and blogger who has personally reviewed more than 300 energy drinks in the past several years. Judgments are based on the drink's cost, its cost… per ounce, active ingredients, taste rating and "kick" rating. In a recent article, Justin T. rated Wired X505, 5-Hour Energy and Fixx Energy Drink as strongest. Hype MFP, Vim & Vigor Citrus and Who's Your Daddy are his top three in taste.
by Jason Petty
Enthusiast Jason Petty rates almost 120 energy drinks, including many unconventional brands. Drinks are given two ratings on a scale of one to 10 (10 is best); the first for taste, the second for power.… Also included are the cost for each bottle and the "good stuff" -- the stimulants and amino acids used to give the drink its kick. The site includes top ten lists for taste and power. Currently, Shock Triple Mocha and Shock Triple Latte are rated among the highest for their energy kick. SoBe No Fear, Nos and Shock Triple Mocha are tops for taste.
by Jason Hargett
Jason Hargett is a web designer who enjoys reviewing energy drinks. More than 180 drinks are reviewed on a one-to-10 scale, with information given on price, serving size, calories and active ingredients.… Each drink is given two ratings: an editor rating based on energy, taste and value, and a user rating. The site gives annual Screaming Energy Drink Awards. In 2008, Go Girl Glo won for best women's energy drink, Java Monster Coffee Lo-Ball for best value, Matrix Mood Enhancing Energy Drink for most energy, Mana Energy Potion for most original and coolest packaging, and On Go Energy Shot for best energy shot. Screaming Energy Not-So Awards are given in several categories including worst taste to Screamin Energy Shot, and for least energy, Coolah Energy. A comparison chart lets you compare ratings for all drinks.
by "EnergyGuru"
"EnergyGuru" is a Harvard Business School-trained entrepreneur whose original goal was to review every energy drink made with taurine, an amino sulfonic acid added to many energy drinks in the hope of… increasing energy. However, his current goal appears to be to review every energy drink. More than 1,000 energy drinks are reviewed here. A top-10 list of best-tasting drinks includes BooKoo Berry, Hype and Joker, while a best buzz list includes BooKoo Citrus, Diesel and Hansens Deuce. On the list for worst-tasting are El Popo, Emerge and Fixx. This is one of the few sites that lists sugar-free drinks and all-natural energy drinks, with a listing of close to 100 of each type. Drinks are reviewed, but none are given numerical ratings. There are no ads on this site -- another plus.
by "Jeff" and "Chan"
This blog site offers reviews of almost 250 energy drinks with ratings for taste and kick, as well as overall ratings. There are currently nine winners for best taste, including Monster Java Chai Hai, Full… Throttle Coffee Mocha, and Rip It A'tomic Pom. Picks for best kick include Cocaine Energy Drink, Jack Herer 420 Hemp Energy Infusion and Rockstar Roasted Mocha. Eight drinks are awarded the title of worst tasting and include varieties from Rockstar and Starbucks.
by Mike Fahey
An editor of this video-game review blog dedicates a page to energy drinks after taste testing 13 brands in his home one weekend, allowing several hours in between each drink. He provides descriptions, a… little history here and there, and grades each drink on a scale of one to 10 for taste and buzz. In the end, he gives Savage Energy a perfect score for taste, and Cocaine wins for the "biggest jolt." His all-round winner, with an average score of eight between the two categories, is Monster Energy.
by "Nolan" and "Nick"
Energy drink bloggers Nolan and Nick provide quick, concise reviews of around 450 energy drinks and rate each for buzz and taste. Although they don't include comparisons or a list of their favorites (or… least favorites), their site is fairly new -- they started collecting energy drinks in the summer of 2008, making theirs one of the most current review sites we found. Nolan or Nick are also available to answer your energy drink questions in the chat room located on their blog home page.
by Dan Mayer
Dan Mayer is a software engineer and energy drink fan. Over five years, he has reviewed over 400 formulas. Ratings are based on taste, energy and "mixability," and drinks are ranked on a scale of one to 10.… Unfortunately, as of May 2008, Dan is no longer updating this site, and the link to his list of the all-time best energy drinks no longer works. However, his March 2008 list of top ten best energy drinks can still be found under the Energy Reviews tab on the site. Orange Tangerine Jeff Gordon 24 Energy, Go Fast Energy Drink and Monster KHAOS are his top three. His past reviews are also still available.
by Editors of EnergyDrinkGuru.com
The "Energy Drink Guru," who doesn't give away any hints to his identity, is an aficionado who has sampled almost 100 energy drinks. Each energy drink review is a paragraph or two long, and features a photo… of the can along with the reviewer's opinion of the drink, which is mostly based on taste. Nothing is ranked, however, and without any background information on the site's author, credibility is a question mark. Still, the short reviews are fairly critical, and useful if taste is your priority.
by Phillip Chacon and Contributors to DrinkAddict.com
This energy drink review website, created by Phillip Chacon, features user reviews of over 300 energy drinks. Currently, top-rated drinks with more than one review include Monster Irish Cream, Rockstar… Punched and Crunk!!!. Drinks are rated on a 10-point scale for taste, aroma, aftertaste, packaging and whether the reviewer would be a repeat buyer. The numerical ranking is also translated into a five-star rating. Most drinks have only one or two user reviews, however.
by Editors of BevNet.com
BevNet.com is a beverage-oriented media company that reviews non-alcoholic beverages and provides information about the beverage industry. The site features reviews of more than 3,600 beverages including… energy drinks, with a BevNet review and a rating of one to five stars. There is also a section for user reviews of each beverage. Bawls Guarana is rated as the best energy drink of 2008 and Upstart UpShot is the Best Energy Shot.
by Editors of ConsumerReports.org
ConsumerReports.org compares 12 carbonated energy drinks according to caffeine level, taste, calories per 8-ounce serving, cost and types of stimulants. All the most popular drinks are listed from lowest to… highest caffeine content, though none are ranked. The 8-ounce serving information can be misleading, since most of these beverages come packaged in larger sizes. Consumer Reports' conclusion is that an occasional energy drink is okay for most individuals, but overindulging isn't a good idea.

by "Big Red Boots"
"Big Red Boots" blogs about caffeine for Examiner.com. After sampling 250 caffeinated energy products over the past year, he names Spike Shotgun as the Best Energy Drink, Cocaine Energy Drink as the Best… Tasting Energy Drink, and Redline Rush as the Strongest Energy Drink. Stay Alert Energy is the Best Buzz and Nutrition Shot. "Big Red Boots" has also posted reviews of about 300 energy drinks, as well as several articles, including his thoughts on "Energy Drinks for your Teen." He also writes for the blog PossessedbyCaffeine.com.
by "Edjunkie (Troy)"
Blogger Troy at EdJunkie.com reviews 200 energy drinks. He shows a picture of each can and discusses the packaging, slogan, taste, kick, ingredients, and web presence of each drink, then recaps by giving… each category a letter grade of A to F. He's a tough grader; few drinks get above a grade of B in any category. He doesn't compare the drinks or post a "best of" list, so you have to click on each product to find out what he thinks of it.
by Sam Eifling
Sam Eifling samples eight of the most popular energy drinks and gives opinions based on taste, how they affect his mental state and how they make his body feel. Pepsi's Mountain Dew Amp energy drink is not… recommended, and Full Throttle Energy by Coca-Cola doesn't supply much energy. Rockstar Energy Cola is the only one that offers him "that feeling of physical exuberance you expect from an energy drink." However, this flavor has now been discontinued following Rockstar's distribution deals with Coca-Cola and now Pepsi.
by William Grimes
This review is older but still relevant, since many of the sampled energy drinks are still available. William Grimes focuses mainly on taste in this article, and he doesn't even try for a controlled test --… he downed several energy drinks one after another. But the focus on flavor is interesting and the article itself is very fun to read. SoBe Adrenaline Rush is his favorite: "Of all the carbonated energy drinks, this is the only one I could imagine drinking in the morning. It's like a nonalcoholic mimosa." (Note that ConsumerSearch is part of The New York Times Company, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)
by Editors of EnergyFiend.com
This website, run by several caffeine-loving hobbyists, features a shorter database of over 240 drinks and a longer database of over 450 drinks, listing the total caffeine content and mg per ounce of… caffeine in popular soft drinks and energy drinks. This is a real help, since the Food and Drug Administration does not require energy drink manufacturers to list the caffeine content on energy drink labels. There are also reviews of several energy drinks.
by Contributors to Amazon.com
Amazon.com is an online retailer that invites users to share their opinions of products they have bought. Amazon.com currently lists more than 200 types of energy drinks, though many have received few, if… any, user reviews. Red Bull Energy Drink has received mostly positive reviews, with the few negative reviews aimed more at Amazon.com's high price than at the drink itself. Rockstar Juiced Energy Drink Plus Guava receives more reviews than most, with a large number of reviewers saying this is the best-tasting energy drink, in their opinion. Guru 100% Natural energy drinks also fare well here. Many more reviews can be found at Amazon.com by searching for "energy drinks" in other sections, especially Health & Personal Care.

by Melissa Dahl
Health editor Melissa Dahl puts 5-Hour Energy drink to the test by personally trying it after dinner on a Friday night, as well as the next morning while moving into her new apartment. She finds that 5-Hour… does provide a gradual boost of energy with no jittery feelings and no crash later. She likes that it only has four calories and no sugar, but she decides that she'll follow the advice of nutritionists and only turn to energy drinks occasionally. She doesn't test any other energy drinks for this review, however.
by Allison Aubrey
Allison Aubrey reports on the wider consumption of energy drinks in the last few years, particularly by the teen market. She asks a toxicology professor to test 10 well-known brands for caffeine levels, and… finds that a 16-ounce can of SoBe No Fear contains almost five times the amount of caffeine as in a can of Coca-Cola or Pepsi. Caffeine researchers say the amount of caffeine in a single can of these energy drinks is not alarming, but experts say that teens are often unaware of just how much caffeine they're consuming in these products.

by Abby Ellin
This article covers the controversy surrounding acai, a purple berry from the Brazilian rain forest that is occasionally used in energy drinks. This "superfood" has been touted as a weight loss aid, body… detoxification aid, and even as a wrinkle remover, with little or no scientific evidence to back up the claims. Consumers are warned to watch out for scams from companies offering risk-free trials of acai weight loss products. Some of these companies continue to send products and bill customers who fail to cancel within the trial period. This article is relevant because this ingredient now appears in so many energy-drink brands. (Note that ConsumerSearch is part of The New York Times Company, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)
