A tough workout, but it's worth it: For intermediate to advanced fitness enthusiasts, Jillian Michaels: Ripped in 30 is a tough, circuit training-based program. The routines are challenging, but reviewers say that they deliver big results.
Classic tough love yields results: Jillian Michaels made a name for herself as the trainer of the popular and long-running weight-loss reality TV program "The Biggest Loser." In Ripped in 30, Michaels is as tough as ever. For her fans, her tough-talking commentary is motivating, but reviewers say that if you're looking for a perkier instructor, look elsewhere. Instruction is clear and Michaels slows down the pace of the routines a bit more than in previous DVDs to allow participants to focus on form. Some reviewers take issue with some sections which veer slightly too "preachy," but in general, Michaels receives excellent reviews.
Short, circuit-based routines are best for advanced users. Jillian Michaels: Ripped in 30 features four routines in increasing difficulty levels. At the beginning of the program, Michaels explains that each program is intended to be done for an entire week (four routines, four weeks), though she admits that the routines may take more than a week to become comfortable with.
As with Michaels' popular 30 Day Shred DVD, Ripped in 30 follows her 3-2-1 formula. Each 24-minute routine goes through circuits with three minutes of strength, two minutes of cardio and one minute of abs. Reviewers say the moves are innovative and challenging -- even the first of the four levels -- and test your strength, core, balance and agility. Compound moves make the routines even more difficult. More advanced participants, say reviewers, will appreciate the unique routines and will see better tone and pounds dropped as a reward. Others note that the program is far too difficult for beginners.
A 30-day diet plan to make the most of your workout: In addition to the two-discs, the DVD also comes with a 30-day diet plan, which can be downloaded online. Reviewers say that the meal plan -- which includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack options -- is light, but "doable."
