Professional painters don't often recommend inexpensive exterior paint, mainly because labor costs far outweigh supply costs, and if you're going to hire a contactor to paint your whole house, you only want to do it once. Still for less crucial jobs, or for DIY-ers who want to save on paint costs, Valspar Ultra Premium in several finishes held up well in testing by an independent organization. Its appearance remained good after a simulation that equaled nine years of wear. Ultra Premium has a lifetime warranty and is available in flat, satin, semi-gloss and high gloss finishes. It is available at Lowes. If you can spend more, many professional painters recommend Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint (*est. $42 per gallon or $205 for five gallons), a high-quality paint with long endurance.

We found a thorough laboratory test of exterior house paints, including Valspar Ultra Premium, at Consumer Reports. Consumer Reports' ratings chart is available online only to subscribers, but a free August 2008 blog posting on its website does mention that Valspar is among the leaders in its rankings. We also found some user comments about Valspar Ultra Premium on OurFixerUpper.com.
