You'll need to add your own hard drives but it's a top option for small-office or even advanced home networks.

Performance

Fast and feature packed. The Synology DiskStation DS412+ NAS drive scores highly in experts' testing. CNET's Dong Ngo, who tests the DiskStation DS412+ using a single Ethernet connection, discovers "stellar" data rates that outpace most NAS servers he has tested. Andrew Harrison at PC Advisor calls the DiskStation Manager operating system the "most attractive and easy to use" available. But while managing users and files is easy, mastering complex tasks is more challenging for those without some network experience.

Reliability

Plastic build, but with solid support. The Synology DiskStation DS412+ NAS drive uses plastic for the enclosure and drive bays. While that might give rise to some durability concerns, PC Advisor's Harrison says it's "well crafted," nonetheless. The chassis reduces vibrations, and as a result, this NAS drive runs quietly. The DiskStation DS412+ earns a favorable reputation among Amazon.com users, and negative reviews are relatively scarce. A two-year warranty is included, and phone support is available. CNET's Dong Ngo describes Synology's customer support as "generally very responsive and helpful."

Value

Great value compared to similar systems, but could be overkill for home use. For many home users, however, simpler and far-less-expensive network drive solutions are available.
