Men are just as susceptible to skin maladies as women are, but you wouldn't know it by the way skin-care products are typically marketed almost exclusively to women. Still, experts say that men can benefit from a good skin-care routine as much as women can, and their needs are relatively the same. Paula Begoun says, "Regardless of gender, skin is skin. In terms of what either gender needs to create and maintain healthy, protected skin, there is no fundamental difference."
Furthermore, the men's skin-care aisle is just as likely to contain eye creams with overhyped attributes. Lab Series Skincare for Men Max LS Instant Eye Lift (*Est. $45 for 0.5 oz.) , for instance, is recommended by Men's Health magazine as a good eye moisturizer for men. Editors say ingredients like wheat protein and sweet almond seed extract can tighten the skin around the eyes and diminish the appearance of crow's feet and wrinkles.
Like so many other eye creams, however, Begoun says this one can't perform miracles. "Despite containing some exciting anti-aging ingredients, none of them are unique for the eye area nor can they lift sagging skin or help with under-eye bags," she explains. The formula contains passion flower and myrtle extracts that can irritate the delicate eye area, she warns, which is why she doesn't recommend it. Without those ingredients, she says, Max LS Instant Eye Lift would be a worthwhile, temporary cosmetic fix for dark circles.
Although there's a growing market of skin-care products designed for men, we find few reviews for men's eye cream products. However, products that are typically marketed to women are perfectly safe and effective for men. The healthy-skin ingredients that brighten the eyes, protect from signs of aging and improve skin over time are identical for men and women alike.
Experts say a gentle eye cream or facial moisturizer that's rich in antioxidants, moisturizers and other state-of-the-art ingredients is essential for healthy skin surrounding the eyes. Olay Regenerist Regenerating Serum, Fragrance Free (*Est. $20 for 1.7 oz.) , Clinique Even Better Eyes Dark Circle Corrector (*Est. $40 for 0.33 oz.) , Estee Lauder Idealist Cooling Eye Illuminator (*Est. $60 for 0.5 oz.) and other formulas discussed in this report are good products to start with, no matter your gender.
