Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser is an effective cleanser for all but sensitive skin, and the company uses eco-friendly production processes. It also uses ingredients that are derived from natural sources, but you should be aware that some have been processed to the point they're no longer so natural. This product also contains synthetic fragrance that may be irritating to sensitive skin.
Eco-friendly, but not entirely natural. Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser is a water-soluble formula with a short ingredients list. Although 90 percent of those ingredients are "naturally derived," skin care expert Paula Begoun of PaulasChoice.com warns that processing changes their composition to something less natural. Some of the ingredients -- including fragrance and salicylic acid -- can cause reactions for those with sensitivities.
Still, Begoun says the cleanser cleans thoroughly with no residue and removes all but waterproof makeup easily; and Neutrogena draws kudos from Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) for its eco-friendly manufacturing processes and packaging.
Gel-like texture with mild scent. The editors of InStyle magazine name Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser -- a gel that lathers into a rich foam -- a best beauty buy for 2012. They write that "it does everything a cleanser should do, washing away dirt, oil, and makeup without any of the unfortunate side effects, such as stripping, stinging, or drying."
The artificial fragrance draws mixed reviews but is, unfortunately, still a common ingredient even in "natural" formulations. Due to this and a couple of other potential irritants, users offer mixed reviews -- either the cleanser leaves them feeling fresh and clean, or causes some breakouts for those with sensitive skin.
Paula Begoun gives Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser her highest rating and says it's suitable for all skin types (except sensitive because it contains fragrance). She says the formula is gentle and cleanses thoroughly without any residue and without stripping the skin.

Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser is given the Eco Beauty Award for 2012 because of the company's commitment to reduced energy output in the manufacturing process, 100 percent recyclable materials and because the cleanser contains 90 percent "naturally derived" ingredients. It's unclear if the CEW group tested this product.
