The 2008 Hyundai Sonata is a roomy family sedan at a price on par with most economy cars. Better still, most reviewers say that the Sonata offers more than price alone would suggest. The interior is spacious, with good head- and leg-room in the rear seat. Acceleration for V6-equipped Sonata is brisk, and all models boast shorter braking distances in road tests. Dependability ratings for Sonata sedans with the 4-cylinder engine are above average, and Hyundai includes a ten-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. A few evaluators found that the Sonata was prone to little squeaks and rattles. A high backseat floor hump can make long rides uncomfortable for a fifth passenger, and a smallish trunk opening limits cargo flexibility. Nonetheless, reviewers generally concur that the Hyundai Sonata is a great budget alternative to the class-leading Honda Accord (*est. $20,360 to $28,060) and Toyota Camry (*est. $18,720 to $28,270).
We found good reporting on the Hyundai Sonata at Consumer Reports magazine, which includes results of road-testing coupled with repair and owner satisfaction data. Consumer Guide follows a similar formula for its driving evaluations; however, its editors report results in a very different format, which is primarily numerical and can be less user-friendly. Car and Driver features an analysis of smaller-scale comparison testing involving the 2009 Hyundai Sonata, which provides a sneak peek of next year's model. Testers at Motor Trend include a useful long-term evaluation, wherein the Sonata was driven by a number of editors over 12 months and consistency of performance and build quality was noted. The Sonata appears on two lists of reviewers' recommendations, one at Kelley Blue Book and the other at Cars.com.

This comparative evaluation rates the 2009 Hyundai Sonata Limited against six other notable family cars. Editors road-tested each entrant, judging them on performance, design and comfort. The 2009 Sonata places fourth here, though the judges say they were pleased with the upgrades they noticed during their sneak peek at next year's model. Their ultimate conclusion was that the Sonata needs a bit more fine-tuning before making a bid for the number-one slot, but that it's definitely an appealing up-and-comer.

While Consumer Guide reports its test results primarily in a numerical format that isn't the most user-friendly, the thorough nature of the performance analysis as well as the editors' value-based recommendations make this a helpful resource for most shoppers. Here the Sonata scores around the average for its class, but its affordable pricetag, nice complement of standard safety features and long warranty coverage inspire Consumer Guide's editors to award the Sonata their "Recommended" label.
