The Volvo S40 has seen some changes in the past couple of years. Notably, it doesn't offer all-wheel drive anymore, and the only powertrain option is a turbocharged five-cylinder engine with five-speed automatic transmission. However, the S40 has not been redesigned, and reviewer sentiment about this car hasn't changed: It's judged more stylish and upscale than the average family sedan, but not as athletic as a sports sedan. For a full analysis, see our page on the 2009 Volvo S40 (*Est. $28,550 to $33,800).
All S40s now run on a 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine with a five-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Expect 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg combined, according to EPA estimates.
In independent crash tests at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2011 Volvo S40 earns the highest rating of "good" in front and rear crash tests here, but it's judged only "acceptable" in side crash and rollover roof-strength tests. In separate ratings by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the S40 posts a 4-star score (out of 5) for rollover resistance; its front and side crash protection have not yet been tested against the agency's new, more rigorous standards. Antilock brakes, traction and stability control and front, front-side and curtain airbags all come standard, along with whiplash-reducing front head restraints.
Base MSRP for the 2011 Volvo S40 is $27,750 for the entry-level T5 trim or $31,150 for the sport-trimmed T5 R-Design.
