Very few pedestal fans get top marks from expert reviewers and owners. While they're ideal in concept (send air long distances, cool an entire room), they often fall short in execution. Users also say pedestal fans can be loud, unstable or unsightly. The Dyson AM03 Pedestal Fan, however, solves at least two of these problems.
Users frequently call this fan extremely well-made and easy to assemble. They don't fear it will topple over, like other pedestal fans. It's also very sleek and well-designed, meaning it can be left out for "company," according to a Wired.com reviewer. Several Amazon.com agree that it's great for public spaces like living rooms and offices. What reviewers don't agree on is the fan's effectiveness. Wired.com reviewer John C. Abell says the Dyson's design is what makes this fan a must-have. He calls the airflow unexceptional, and Amazon.com users say the fan's air output is nothing special.
A small number of reviewers at Target.com and BestBuy.com disagree. They say the Dyson AM03 Pedestal Fan is extremely effective, and one adds, "it works better than any other fan that I have ever owned." In general, users say the fan produces a significant amount of sound on higher settings, but they don't seem to find the sound as disruptive as reviewers of the Dyson AM01 Table Fan (*Est. $230) do. This may be due to the fact that many use the AM03 in larger spaces, and the AM01 is more often used in bedrooms where it may disrupt sleep.
The Dyson AM03 is also packed with features, and some users say these add significant value. It tilts with a simple push or pull (no buttons or levers), oscillates and comes with a remote control. Most notably, it's also bladeless, thanks to Dyson's Air Multiplier design, which can also be seen in the Dyson AM01 Table Fan and the AM02 Tower Fan. The bladeless design makes the AM03 easy to clean (no grilles to remove) and safe for kids and pets.
John Abell says the Dyson Air Multiplier's appeal isn't really the smooth airflow, but its design, technology and convenience. He points out that it's extremely easy to assemble, won't fall apart if knocked over and is safe for kids, and it's simple to adjust the direction of airflow. But its most valuable aspect, he says, is its style. It can be left out for "company," and it will get a lot more use because it can be placed so prominently.
Review: Burning in a Heat Wave? Let Mr. Dyson's Latest Fan Blow You Away, John C. Abell, July 28, 2010
Compared to other mainstream fans, the Dyson AM03 Pedestal Fan doesn't get many reviews at Amazon.com (about 20), but it still gets significantly more than many high-end designer fans. The majority of reviewers give the fan an overall rating of 5 stars, and the average score is 4.3 stars. Like the AM01 Table Fan, users say this fan can be loud on the highest settings, but they seem more forgiving of this flaw in the AM03. Several note that the fan is easy to assemble and clean. All owners note that the fan is stylish and well-designed, but some say it is not worth the price.

HomeDepot.com imports its reviews of Dyson products directly from Dyson.com; there are 11 reviews here averaging 4.7 stars. Since the comments are largely positive, they do not add much more than can be found at Amazon.com. Reviewers really like the design and style, the silver color and the included remote. Again, some say it is louder than they expected or would like.

With three reviews, the Dyson AM03 actually has more user feedback than most fans at Target.com. The fan averages about 4.5 stars, but users don't offer very detailed reviews. Two users say the fan moves air exceptionally well -- even better than a conventional fan -- which is a comment not seen elsewhere.

In just one review of the Dyson AM01 Pedestal Fan at BestBuy.com, a user gives it 5 stars and offers a relatively detailed explanation. Like Target.com reviewers, this owner is very pleased with the fan's output, saying, "it really works better than any other fan that I have ever owned." The reviewer also refers to the AM03 as a piece of art.

6. Apartment Therapy.com
ApartmentTherapy.com lists several "well designed" fans and provides a photo of each one -- but there's no discussion of performance and no indication that the fans were tested. All three Dyson Air Multiplier fans are picked, but it's not clear how or why.
