The Brother IntelliFax-1860C is a powerful inkjet-based fax machine that can print and fax in color or monochrome. The modem is fast and is capable of sending a fax page in as little as three seconds. The per-page costs of inkjets is higher than lasers, but the use of independent cartridges for each ink color helps keep them relatively low, and we like that the fax machine ships with full-capacity cartridges. A step-up version, the Brother IntelliFax-1960C (*Est. $170) adds an expandable cordless phone and a digital answering machine, but faxing performance should be identical. If you don't need color printing or faxing, the black-and-white HP 640 (*Est. $80) inkjet-based fax machine is a little less capable but also a bit less expensive.
User reviews provide the most useful buying advice for the Brother IntelliFax-1860C. Amazon.com, Staples.com and BestBuy.com don't each have a ton of reviews, but when considered together, a clear picture of how well users like the fax machine emerges.
