The Brother IntelliFax-1860C is a powerful inkjet-based fax machine that can print and fax in either color or monochrome. The modem is fast, and is capable of sending a fax page in as little as three seconds. The per-page costs of inkjets is higher than laser, but the use of independent cartridges for each ink color helps keep them relatively low, and we like that the fax machine ships with full-capacity cartridges. A step-up version, the Brother IntelliFax-1960C (*est. $170) adds an expandable cordless phone and a digital answering machine, but faxing performance should be identical. If you don't need color printing or faxing, the black-and-white HP 640 (*est. $60) inkjet-based fax machine is a little less capable, but also a bit less expensive.
