Brother IntelliFax-2840

Cheap office fax machine

Pros
  • Fast
  • Good print quality
  • Easy to set up and use
Cons
  • Some reliability complaints
  • No backup memory

Bottom line

The Brother IntelliFax-2840 foregoes fancy features in favor of a hard-to-resist bottom line. This monochrome laser fax machine sends and receives faxes quickly and clearly, and is adept at scanning and copying as well.

Performance

Fast and easy to use. The Brother IntelliFax-2840 has a 250-page paper capacity and can send faxes as fast as 2.5 seconds per page. Owners praise its speed and print quality, and even users who are not tech savvy find it easy to set up and use. Complaints about paper jams are fairly rare, though more common than for the pricier IntelliFax-4100e. Another problem that affects some users (but not most) is the machine's failure to wake up from its deep-sleep mode when an incoming fax arrives. A few owners also describe quirks such as problems sending to certain numbers or receiving faxes if there is any noise on the telephone line.

Features

Few bells and whistles. The IntelliFax-2840 doesn't have as many features as the IntelliFax-4100e. It can't accommodate an extra paper tray, and its auto document feeder holds up to 20 pages rather than 30. It also can't retain stored faxes in memory during a power outage. However, it does offer scanning and copying capabilities, and a USB connection lets it serve as a computer printer. On the plus side, it can auto-dial up to 222 numbers, more than the IntelliFax-4100e, and it can send faxes simultaneously to as many as 272 locations. It can also scan one document into memory while receiving or sending another.

Value

Middling costs for consumables. In general, users say that they are pleased with the bang for the buck offered by the Brother IntelliFax-2840. However, a few are frustrated that the machine ships with only a starter toner cartridge that yields around 700 pages. The standard toner cartridge (Est. $32) has a yield of 1,200 pages, but Brother also offers a high-capacity cartridge (Est. $42) that's rated for 2,600 pages. This lowers the per-page cost to 1.8 cents, but that's still nearly twice as high as the per-page cost for the IntelliFax-4100e. The machine comes with a fairly standard one-year limited warranty.
