Sentinel Flavor Tabs

Oral flea medication for dogs

pros
  • Effective at controlling fleas
  • Doesn't expose dogs to insecticide
  • Also controls heartworm, hookworm, roundworm and whipworm
cons
  • Won't kill adult fleas
  • Not as popular as topical medications

Topical flea medications, which are applied to the nape of a pet's neck, kill adult fleas and prevent reinfestations; internal medications, on the other hand, cause the pet's skin to secrete a substance that inhibits flea eggs' development. When it comes to internal flea control for dogs, veterinarians recommend Sentinel Flavor Tabs, which are effective, easy to administer, and control not only fleas but also heartworm, hookworm, roundworm and whipworm. You should be aware, however, that Sentinel Flavor Tabs won't kill adult fleas; for that, you'll need a topical medication such as Advantage Once-a-Month Topical Flea Treatment for Dogs & Puppies (*est. $50 for four-month supply).

We find the most convincing recommendations for Sentinel Flavor Tabs at two veterinary sites: PlacervilleVet.com and MainStreetPetCare.com, which both compare various internal and external flea-control remedies for dogs and cats and offer their advice.

Our Sources

1. PlacervilleVet.com

This helpful article describes various flea-control products and recommends some of them. Deciding between Program and Sentinel seem to be a tossup, but the author points out that Sentinel also controls heartworm in dogs.

2. Main Street Pet Care

The website of this veterinary hospital goes into great depth about anti-flea treatments. Sentinel, Program and Capstar -- which are administered to cats or dogs via pills or injection -- are recommended here, and the site also advises outfitting pets on these medications with a Preventic collar for tick control. The author isn't fond of Advantage or Frontline -- which runs contrary to other veterinary sites' advice -- but he does have some good things to say about Revolution.
