With 14.9 cubic feet of storage space, the GE FCM15PUWW chest freezer is a good choice for storing a lot of food for a long period of time. It's not as easy to use as an upright freezer, but sliding storage baskets and an interior light make organization easier, and a drainage hose helps with manual defrosting. The freezer performs well in professional tests, and owners have few complaints about its reliability.
Plenty of room. Owners say the GE FCM15PUWW chest freezer offers ample storage space for a family of four. One reviewer at GE's website says it can store a whole side of beef (about 250 pounds) with plenty of room to spare. Finding what you've stored is also easier than usual for a chest freezer thanks to the GE's four storage baskets, which can be lifted out or slid along an interior rail. Other features include an interior light, a power indicator light and a locking lid. The only additional feature users say they'd like to see is an open-door alarm.
A solid performer. In professional tests this Energy Star-rated GE FCM15PUWW chest freezer gets excellent marks for energy efficiency. It also gets very good scores for its ability to maintain a constant temperature throughout, even in changing weather conditions. One reviewer at HomeDepot.com says that even in a hot garage during an Arizona summer, the compressor doesn't run most of the time. Professional testers find the GE louder than average for a chest freezer, but most users have no problem with the noise: We actually saw multiple reviews praising its quietness. Like all chest freezers, the GE requires manual defrosting, but it has a drain to make the process easier.
May not seal snugly. In more than 170 user-written reviews, we found only a handful of complaints about the reliability of the GE FCM15PUWW chest freezer. Most of these are from users who say the freezer either stopped working within a couple of days or never got down to freezing temperature. The most common complaint about this freezer in reviews is that the lid does not seal securely, resulting in heavy frost buildup. The freezer has only a standard one-year warranty, but we didn't read enough reports of breakdowns to evaluate GE's repair service.
