Consumer Reports is the best review source for freezers, testing upright and chest freezers for ease of use, loading flexibility and temperature consistency. This GE freezer is sold mainly at Home Depot, and we found a number of user reviews for the GE FUF14DTRWH on the store's website.
Experts recommend upright self-defrosting freezers as the best type to use if you need to store a wide variety of foods and have regular access to its contents. Chest freezers, on the other hand, are a bit more difficult to organize. The General Electric FUF14DTRWH is a top-rated 13.7-cubic-foot upright freezer; this capacity is a good mid-sized choice -- experts say that a full freezer works better than a partially full freezer, so you should only get as much capacity as you need. The GE freezer has three fixed shelves and five racks on the door, along with an interior light. There's no door alarm or temperature alarm, however. If you don't need to access frozen food as often and prefer a chest freezer, the Frigidaire AFFC1466D (*est. $550) is about the same size as the GE upright freezer and has a self-defrost function.
