Experts recommend upright self-defrosting freezers as the best type to use if you need to store a wide variety of foods and have regular access to its contents. Chest freezers, on the other hand, are a bit more difficult to organize. When it was a current model, the General Electric FUF14DTRWH was a top-rated 13.7-cubic-foot upright freezer; this capacity is a good mid-sized choice -- experts say that a full freezer works better than a partially full freezer, so you should only get as much capacity as you need. The GE freezer had three fixed shelves and five racks on the door, along with an interior light. There's no door alarm or temperature alarm, however.
ConsumerReports.org included the General Electric FUF14DTRWH in a report on freezers from 2007, and HomeDepot.com had owner reviews for this model when it was sold there. However, these reviews are no longer available.
