The Kenmore Elite 28712 upright freezer is expensive for its 16.7 cubic feet, but it offers a lot of features for the money. In addition to frost-free operation, it includes digital controls, a quick-freeze option, alarms to alert you if the door is open or the temperature reaches unsafe levels and a soft-freeze zone for ice cream. The interior is organized with glass shelves, adjustable door storage and a retractable pizza shelf. In professional tests, the Kenmore offers excellent temperature control, but it is only moderately efficient despite its Energy Star rating. It is also louder than most freezers; some users complain about its noise level, while others don't find it a problem. If you'd rather have more space for less money and don't care about the extra luxury features, the 20.5-cubic-foot Frigidaire FFU21F5HW (*Est. $690) gets very good reviews. Or, if you don't need the easy access of an upright freezer, you can get even more capacity for your dollar with a chest freezer such as the GE FCM15PUWW (*Est. $550) .
ConsumerReports.org includes the Kenmore Elite 28712 in its latest freezer evaluations, basing its scores on the test results for the similar, but not identical, Frigidaire Gallery GLFH17F8HW (*Est. $820) . We also found around 50 reviews for this freezer at Sears.com, the only retail site that sells Kenmore appliances.
