In tests, the self-defrosting, 19.6-cubic-foot Whirlpool EV209NBTQ is among the highest-rated models. It's not as energy efficient as some manual-defrost models, but it is Energy Star-rated. The Whirlpool is unique in its two-door design, which reviewers say is convenient and helps keep food cold when reorganizing the freezer's contents. It also has plenty of other features, including power-on and interior lights, temperature alarm, open-door alarm and a variety of bins and shelving options. An optional ice-maker kit (*Est. $70) is available, and the freezer comes in white and natural silver (for $50 more). If the Whirlpool is out of your price range, the 12.1-cubic-foot Frigidaire FFU12F2HW (*Est. $390) is much less expensive and is also highly rated. It does have more basic features, however.
ConsumerReports.org, ConsumerGuide.com and Bestcovery.com offer professional reviews of the Whirlpool EV209NBTQ. Of these sources, only ConsumerReports.org discusses testing methodology, but ConsumerGuide.com offers more detailed discussion of the freezer. We found only one owner review for the Whirlpool EV209NBTQ at AJMadison.com, but Viewpoints.com users offer some insight into Whirlpool upright freezers in general.

Although the review describes opening the doors and sliding out the plastic bin, there's no indication whether the freezer was tested for performance.
