Reviews say that Dancing Deer Bakery's Harvest Cake is a delicious, modern take on fruitcake. The bakery replaces the usual walnuts, dark raisins and dried pineapple with brandy-soaked golden raisins, apricots and pistachios. The result is a fruitcake that's light in color, moist and boozy, although not overly so. A topping of chopped pecans replaces the traditional glacéed cherries. Although this cake is somewhat more expensive than other fruitcakes, it will keep for as long as 60 days. If you're looking for a traditional fruitcake, reviews point to Assumption Abbey Fruitcake (*est. $28, including shipping), which reviews say is a well-balanced confection that tastes like a fruitcake should.

Marian Burros of The New York Times includes Dancing Deer Harvest Cake in her annual round-up of holiday treats available by mail. In the decades she has been writing the column, Burros has rarely included a fruitcake. Several customers of Epinions also weigh in with their personal experiences with Dancing Deer Bakery products.

Our Sources

1. The New York Times

Burros' long-running column on mail-order holiday foods includes a rarely seen fruitcake recommendation. Dancing Deer's 22-ounce cake is "delightfully boozy and moist, not overly sweet and completely devoid of those glazed fruits we all love to hate," she writes. Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing how many fruitcakes Burros tested. She doesn't describe the mail-order process.
