Fruitcake Review

Introduction to Fruitcake

Most people these days dismiss fruitcake as leaden, liquor-sodden, tooth-achingly sweet or stale - and it's the butt of many holiday jokes. However, fruitcake may be staging a comeback, and in addition to so-called traditional fruitcake filled mainly with candies cherries, nuts and raisins, a number of bakeries are putting more modern spin on the holiday cliché.

Cook's Illustrated magazine tackles fruitcakes, but the topic proves divisive. Another good source is the Mondo Fruitcake blog, the world's only fruitcake blog (as far as we could tell). We also came across a true rarity: a fruitcake recommendation in Marian Burros' annual round-up of mail-order holiday treats. To round out the fruitcake picture, we turned to the food enthusiasts at SeriousEats.com.
