If you have a big, heavy garage door, you're going to need more horsepower, and reviews suggest the Chamberlain PD752D as your best value. It has a 3/4-horsepower engine, compared with the usual 1/2 hp motor on competing garage door openers. The Chamberlain PD752D is chain-driven, though, so it's going to be louder than the belt-driven Chamberlain Whisper Drive WD822KD (*est. $250), the best opener overall in reviews. However, the Whisper Drive, while quieter, is also less powerful with a 1/2 hp motor. The Chamberlain PD752D's motor is covered for six years. There's a wireless outdoor keypad and two remote controls with "rolling code" that changes the entry code so criminals can't record it and get in.
You'll be hard-pressed to find credible professional reviews about garage door openers. Consumer Reports' 2002 coverage is so outdated that it's been taken down from its website. James Dulley offers a buyers' guide for $3 report, but there are no hands-on reviews or ratings. All the owner reviews at Amazon.com are positive – although one says the operation is a bit "jerky" and posts a video comparing it with a less "jerky" product.

1. Amazon.com
None of the approximately 20 owner reviews here give fewer than three out of five stars to the Chamberlain PD752D garage door opener, which is unusually good for any product. One of the reviews says it's a good product but slightly "jerky" mechanically and posts a video to support his assertion.

2. Dulley.com
Columnist James Dulley sells home-products buyers' guides for about $3 each. He doesn't rank models, but details what's available, how they work and how to install and maintain them. He lists belt-, chain- and screw-driven Chamberlains but gives no model numbers.

This overview won't really tell you which model or brand to buy, but does differentiate each brand's various makes, such as Chamberlain's The Power Drive, a residential model designed for do-it-yourselfers.

Since many of nine models tested are discontinued and the article is no longer on Consumer Report's website, you'd have to hunt it down elsewhere online like we did, and frankly it was not worth the effort. No Chamberlain Power Drives are rated, but an older Whisper Drive is.
