Good Garage Door Opener, November 9, 2009

Unit was easy to install. It took me over 10 hours over Saturday and Sunday to install because I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to attach the rail to the garage door header beam without adding any new holes since this is the third opener I am installing in this house and I did not want to make the header beam weaker with additional holes. Same situation with the top beam on the door. I also took advantage of the existing Genie sensor brackets and modified them to accept the new sensors. I gave this opener 4 stars due to it is not as quite as a screw drive Genie and I still cannot set the motor to stop before the door reach the open and close limits. My wooden door is heavy and hope the 3/4 HP Chamberlain last longer than the previous 1/2 HP Genie screw drive which lasted only 4 years.

Just a few tricks installing this, November 3, 2009

It's a great product and get the 3/4 HP model. Took a little effort to install. There are a few tricks installing this. 1. Need more and stronger mounting brackets. I had to buy a few from Home Depot and cut them to fit. 2. Need more lag screws to go with the brackets. 3. Had to buy an automatic Garage Door Closer from Amazon (Xceltronix) 4. Use levels and triangle to make sure things are level and plumb. Wish I had a laser level.

Replace 10 year old 1/2 hp sears with Chamberlain PD752D 3/4 hp, October 28, 2009
The new opener arrived in just two days from a local distributor. The next day my husband had it in and working in a couple hours. It's quite simple when you have one already installed and just need to replace it. He used the existing wiring and even the door sensors. We'll save the new sensors for future use. We didn't need a 3/4 hp but for the price and strength it was worth it.
Chamberlain PD752D, October 25, 2009

Chamberlain PD752D 3/4-Horsepower Heavy-Duty Premium Chain Drive Garage Door Opener * Whisper-quiet, smooth operation * "Security+" rolling-code technology * PosiLock theft protection * Industrial strength power for super-heavy doors * Two remote controls and multi-function wall-mount panel. The unit was well packaged for shipment. Instructions were well written and easy to understand. I have a heavy 7 ft. wood sectional door and it opens easily and smoothly. The sensors aligned easily first try. Only had to make minor adjustments to the force and height open adjustments. The remote controls and wall-mount panel were easy to program to my preference. I love the auto sensing light which comes on automatically when I enter the garage. Although the chain drive openers are a little noisier than some units, (much quieter than my old unit) my experience has been that they are more reliable and require less maintenance. It took me about 4 hours to install from start to finish.

Our Sources

1. Amazon.com

None of the approximately 20 owner reviews here give fewer than three out of five stars to the Chamberlain PD752D garage door opener, which is unusually good for any product. One of the reviews says it's a good product but slightly "jerky" mechanically and posts a video to support his assertion.

2. Dulley.com

Columnist James Dulley sells home-products buyers' guides for about $3 each. He doesn't rank models, but details what's available, how they work and how to install and maintain them. He lists belt-, chain- and screw-driven Chamberlains but gives no model numbers.

This overview won't really tell you which model or brand to buy, but does differentiate each brand's various makes, such as Chamberlain's The Power Drive, a residential model designed for do-it-yourselfers.

4. ConsumerReports.org

Since many of nine models tested are discontinued and the article is no longer on Consumer Report's website, you'd have to hunt it down elsewhere online like we did, and frankly it was not worth the effort. No Chamberlain Power Drives are rated, but an older Whisper Drive is.
