The Garmin Oregon 400t is easily the top pick of reviewers who want a handheld GPS receiver with all the bells and whistles for camping, hiking and otherwise navigating backcountry. The biggest plus is a graphical… touch-screen interface that takes what would otherwise be an intimidating device and makes it eminently usable for beginners and experts alike. Other features include 3-D map viewing, wireless data transfer and paperless geocaching. However, some users say that the touch screen could be brighter. Although accuracy is good, it is beaten by some other GPS receivers. The Garmin Oregon 400t is also expensive.

DeLorme PN-40

Though considerably less expensive, the DeLorme PN-40 handheld GPS device lacks one big feature that the class-leading Garmin Oregon 400t has: a touch screen. Otherwise, reviewers say functionality and especially maps are… excellent. The screen is bright in all lighting conditions, and thanks to the use of a high-sensitivity SiRFstar III signal processor, accuracy is superb. However, the sophisticated PN-40 requires a steep learning curve, and there are no innovative touch-screen controls to help ease the pain.

For handheld GPS buyers on a budget, you could pay more and do worse than the Gamin eTrex Venture HC. A quality color screen and built-in maps are just some of the positives. In addition, the GPS signal processor has high… sensitivity, and accuracy is notably better than most other GPS receivers in its price class. Of course, you won't find any of the bells and whistles found in higher-priced receivers, such as a compass, altimeter or touch screen, but the Venture HC handles the basics -- and more -- just fine.
