GPS First Looks
by Editors of ConsumerReports.org
Our AssessmentConsumerReports.org has tested several phone GPS apps, including the nine listed here. Navigon MobileNavigator and Sygic Mobile Maps get the highest praise. A search for "GPS app" turns up reviews for newer products, including the Garmin nuvifone and Google Maps Navigation for Android phones -- but for the very best navigation, ConsumerReports.org still recommends a stand-alone GPS device. Unlike most ConsumerReports.org content, the GPS blog is available for free.
Road Test: AT&T Navigator GPS iPhone Application
by Dong Ngo
Our AssessmentCNET has tested several GPS apps for iPhone, including four with built-in maps – as well as the AT&T Navigator that downloads maps via your data connection. Unfortunately, AT&T's data signal "is sketchy at best," reviewer Dong Ngo says, and the navigation screen constantly goes blank, even in the middle of New York City. Ngo concludes that apps with built-in maps are better and cheaper in the long run; he specifically names Navigon and TomTom apps as good choices.
Car, Handheld, Sports & Fitness, and Smartphone GPS Reviews, Plus Accessories
by Fred Zahradnik
Our AssessmentAbout.com's guide to GPS, Fred Zahradnik, reviews five cell-phone GPS apps and gives each a rating. The best scores go to MotionX-GPS Drive for iPhone, TeleNav GPS Navigator and a AAA Mobile app that works on both smartphones and flip phones. Zahradnik finds the TomTom for iPhone app "disappointing." (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)
Cell Phone App Reviews Search
by Editors of Laptop Magazine
Our AssessmentLaptop Magazine has reviewed four GPS apps for iPhone, awarding each one a rating. Navigon MobileNavigator is the only one to earn an Editors' Choice designation, beating apps from TomTom, Gokivo and AT&T. Reviews are concise, but they cover all of the main points, drawing comparisons between apps and offering clear buying advice.
Let Your iPhone Drive You
by Jamie Lendino and Sascha Segan
Our AssessmentPCMag.com tests four iPhone apps from major brands. Each one gets a rating, with TomTom for iPhone and AT&T Navigator scoring higher than ALK CoPilot Live and Navigon MobileNavigator. However, some of the testers' complaints about the apps have since been fixed in updates. The review notes that these apps are "works in progress" and get frequent updates, but the review itself has not been updated.
Cell Phone GPS App Smackdown
by Steve Bass
Our AssessmentPC World tests proprietary GPS apps from AT&T, Sprint and Verizon Wireless. All mostly work as they should, but AT&T Navigator performs the best. However, reviewer Steve Bass says, "I'm not ready to give up my Garmin nuvi."
Not All iPhone Turn-by-turn Navigation Apps Are Created Equal
by Andy Ihnatko
Our AssessmentIn this humorous but thorough column, Andy Ihnatko tests and compares four GPS apps for the iPhone. He prefers the $3 MotionX-GPS Drive to pricier apps from TomTom, G-Map and ALK Co-Pilot Live. This review also links to Ihnatko's later test of the free Google Maps Navigation app for Android phones; he finds Android's grating, garbled voice synthesizer unbearable.
GPS Phone Offerings: Price is Nuvifone G60's Downfall; Navigon is on the Money
by Victor Godinez and Jim Rossman
Our AssessmentThe Dallas Morning News tests Navigon MobileNavigator and says it "moves to the top of the list" of iPhone GPS apps. In an earlier review, reviewer Jim Rossman had tested two other turn-by-turn iPhone apps -- Gokivo Navigator and TomTom for iPhone -- but didn't like either of those as much.
GPS App Reviews
by Editors of Gizmodo.com
Our AssessmentGizmodo.com reviews all kinds of gadgets and software, but its GPS smartphone app reviews aren't neatly categorized. A keyword search for "gps app review" turns up several, including a review of the MotionX-GPS Drive for iPhone, which Gizmodo.com says is "hands down the best value in GPS apps," and a head-to-head comparison of more expensive iPhone GPS apps, which Navigon MobileNavigator wins. Google Maps Navigation for Android is judged a powerful app with a few early flaws, and Gizmodo.com predicts it will "swallow the GPS market alive," especially if it reaches iPhone. Still, you'll have to dig to find all of these reviews online.

by Jason Snell
Our AssessmentReviewer Jason Snell explains the differences among three major GPS apps for iPhone: Navigon MobileNavigator, Sygic Mobile Maps and TomTom for iPhone. Snell says his testing of the apps is not complete, but the Navigon app appears to be "the best choice available." A video shows the three apps in action. Macworld also reviews AT&T Navigator for iPhone, finding it "just OK."

He outlines their differences and explains how well they work in his tests. However, none stands out as any better than the others, he says.

by Editors of iSmashPhone.com
Our AssessmentThis website concentrates heavily on reviewing iPhone apps, but reviewers here actually like the free GPS apps that come on Android and Palm Pre phones best. This review compares Google Maps Navigation for Android phones with five major iPhone GPS apps and the TeleNav GPS Navigator app for Palm Pre. Conclusions are based mostly on features, although at least some of the apps appear to have been tested. TomTom for iPhone gets the best rating among iPhone apps.

Our AssessmentThis website sorts the vast iTunes app library into a much more functional form, allowing users to sort apps by type, price, rating and more. Car Tech
by Editors of TrustedReviews.com
Our AssessmentThis U.K. website thoroughly evaluates several GPS apps, awarding each one a rating from one to 10. Reviews are extremely well illustrated with photos and screen shots. ALK CoPilot Live 8 for Windows Mobile phones earns the site's Recommended rating, while TomTom and Navigon apps for iPhone rate lower. The only disadvantage to the reviews here is that maps and navigation are obviously different in Europe.

by Contributors to TheiPhoneBlog.com
Our AssessmentExperienced users review iPhone apps, including GPS apps, for this blog. Reviews are very detailed, and some compare two or more apps directly against each other. iPhone GPS App: Navigon's MobileNavigator Gets You Where You're Going
by Liane Cassavoy
Our AssessmentLiane Cassavoy, About.com's guide to smartphones, tests the Navigon MobileNavigator for iPhone throughout New England and the Boston area. An update gave it the ability to speak street names, which helps, but the MobileNavigator still gets a middling rating due to its lack of a mount, "skimpy" points-of-interest database and tendency to eat the phone's battery and make it run too hot. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)
Sygic Mobile Maps U.S.
by Jeremy Horwitz
Our AssessmentSygic Mobile Maps gets a grade of B- and a limited recommendation from iLounge. This test-based review is lavishly illustrated with screen shots. iLounge.com also reviews Navigon MobileNavigator and gives it a C.
Navigation
by Contributors to Apple App Store
Our AssessmentThe Apple App Store invites customers to review and rate the apps. The store compiles an average rating for each version of an app and also for the app as a whole. However, the Navigation section alone includes thousands of apps, so it's best to have a short list of apps before you plunge in. When we checked, the Navigon MobileNavigator had the highest rating, followed closely by the budget-priced ALK CoPilot Live.
Maps and Navigation
by Contributors to BlackBerry App World
Our AssessmentUsers are invited to rate the apps in the BlackBerry App Store. You can sort the apps by type and by score; the TeleNav GPS Navigator and Gokivo Navigator get the highest ratings among turn-by-turn apps.
