- Best GPS device for backcountry hiking
- Top-of-the-line performance
- Rugged and waterproof
- Easy-to-read screen
- Not as easy to use as the Garmin Colorado 400t
If you're hiking in the wilderness, reviewers say the Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx is a nice budget unit. This older model had been eclipsed in reviews by the DeLorme PN-40 (*Est. $340), but if you want to save a bit more money, reviewers are still fond of the older Garmin GPS.. Although testers say the Colorado GPS is easy to use, it has omitted some features that are important for backcountry hiking -- such as the ability to change the location of waypoints that don't turn out to be where the map indicates. Most users who post at retail sites are just as satisfied as the experts, praising the GPSMAP 60CSx's rugged construction, easy-to-read screen and tenacious satellite lock. Users also like this unit for geocaching (a GPS-assisted treasure-hunt game), but the Garmin Oregon 400t (*Est. $450) is even better, offering specific features for geocaching.
GPSLodge.com has the most complete review of the Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx, based on geocaching, orienteering and biking tests. GPSTracklog.com's review is briefer, but user comments are helpful. Singletrack.com, a blog devoted to mountain biking, tests the similar GPSMAP 60Cx in lieu of the 60CSx. We also found useful owner reviews at Amazon.com and REI.com.

He also compares the GPSMAP 60CSx's SiRFstar III-powered satellite lock with that of his old Garmin eTrex Vista C.

Jeff Barber lists the Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx as one of four "top-rated GPS units for mountain biking" in his extensive blog devoted to mountain biking. Within Barber's blog you can find his full review of the similar Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx, which lacks the GPSMAP 60CSx's compass and barometric altimeter. Barber's main complaint with the GPSMAP 60Cx is its lack of accurate elevation readings - a problem he notes the GPSMAP 60CSx's barometric altimeter would solve.
