Purell Instant Hand Sanitizer
Purell Instant Hand Sanitizer

Best hand sanitizer

According to researchers, any hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol is going to do a good job of killing germs. But if a hand sanitizer feels good and smells good, people are more likely to use it; Purell Instant Hand Sanitizer consistently gets good reviews on both counts. However, Purell does contain artificial fragrance, and some versions have artificial dyes -- two things you won't find in the pricier EO Hand Sanitizing Gel (*Est. $8 for 8 oz.).

EO Hand Sanitizing Gel
EO Hand Sanitizing Gel

Best natural hand sanitizer

Unlike some other natural sanitizers, EO Hand Sanitizing Gel contains the 62 percent alcohol that experts say is necessary to effectively kill germs. Eco-friendly EO also uses organic alcohol and organic lavender and lemon essential oils for fragrance (an unscented version is available too). Some drawbacks: EO costs twice as much as Purell and isn't as widely available.

Nexcare Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer
Nexcare Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer

Best hand sanitizer lotion

Experts say that alcohol is the most effective ingredient for killing germs, but it can also leave skin dry and chapped over time. Nexcare Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer answers this problem with its lotion-based formula. It contains 61 percent ethyl alcohol, making it just as effective as other formulas, but users say it doesn't dry out your skin as much as a regular hand sanitizer. Reviewers also say they like that it doesn't contain any heavy fragrances. Nexcare sanitizer can be hard to find in stores, however.
