Pure Digital Flip MinoHD

If you want the smallest, sleekest pocket high-definition camcorder, reviews point to the iPod-sized Pure Digital Flip MinoHD (*Est. $160) -- but experts caution that you'll be making some trade-offs. The less expensive first-generation MinoHD costs the same as the chunkier Pure Digital Flip UltraHD (*Est. $160), but the UltraHD is better equipped. The pricier second-generation MinoHD (*Est. $230) is equipped like the UltraHD, with a 2-inch LCD screen, two hours of video storage and an HDMI cable so you can watch footage in HD on a TV. However, the UltraHD still does all of this cheaper -- and you can substitute regular AA batteries for its removable, rechargeable batteries if necessary. Like an iPod, the MinoHD's rechargeable battery is built-in and only Pure Digital can replace it. None of these Flip camcorders can shoot still photos or accept a memory card. Like most pocket camcorders, critics say both Flip models are prone to visible hand jitter, there's no optical zoom, and the digital zoom sorely degrades the image. Still, the simplicity of the Pure Digital Flip MinoHD sets it apart from most similar camcorders.

The second-generation Flip MinoHD had just hit the market at the time of this update, but we found plenty of reviews for the first-generation model. CamcorderInfo.com runs a few pocket camcorders through the same battery of tests as the more expensive camcorders it reviews, and editors pick their favorites. CNET and CreativeMac.com also test several camcorders and compare them, although the write-ups there are briefer. Videomaker.com's quick review turns up some flaws with the MinoHD.
