Reviewers say the 46-inch Samsung UN46B8000 has wonderful picture quality and a great lineup of features. The LCD TV uses an edge-lit LED backlight to create blacks that are inky and satisfying, though some TVs produce blacks that are just slightly deeper still, such as the 46-inch Samsung UN46B8500 (*Est. $3,240).
Color performance is another strength of the Samsung UN46B8000, and videophiles will appreciate the wide array of picture controls. The TV also has the ability to connect to the Internet to get additional content, such as news, weather and sports. An enhanced refresh rate (240 Hz) reduces motion blur, while a de-judder setting smoothes out motion when watching movies. Energy efficiency is excellent.
There are a couple of negatives. Off-angle viewing could be better, and those sitting too far to the side won't see the best picture quality. The screen treatment is glossy, which means you'll see more reflections in even moderately-lit rooms than you would with many other LCD TVs. Uniformity isn't 100 percent, and some areas of the screen can seem brighter than others.
If you want something a little larger, the 55-inch Samsung UN55B8000 (*Est. $3,010) should perform just as well as the 46-inch Samsung UN46B800. For those with less to spend, the Samsung LN46B750 (*Est. $1,670) lacks an LED backlight, but the picture quality is still excellent, with good blacks and great color.
Among those reviewing the 46-inch Samsung UN46B8000, HDGuru.com has the most detailed report, though some of what's presented might qualify as information overload for non-videophiles. CNET's report is also informative and not as overwhelming. ConsumerReports.org also tests the set but offers limited discussion. User reviews can be read at Amazon.com.
