Bottom Line

The Astro Gaming A40 Audio System is a great gaming headset for those who play on multiple gaming systems. These headphones are comfortable and deliver excellent sound quality. They also include a mixer/amplifier that lets you customize sound to your needs. However, they get some complaints from users about durability and customer support.

More than just the headphones. As its name implies, the Astro Gaming A40 Audio System is more than just a pair of headphones. It also includes the MixAmp Pro, a mixer/amplifier that has inputs for PCs and console games, as well as other devices such as MP3 players. This device can equalize sound levels for music listening and adjust the balance of voice to in-game sound. Alex Cocilova of says the MixAmp is a bit complicated to set up, but it delivers "fantastic" sound for music and videos as well as games. Users at agree, calling these headphones "near audiophile level." Reviewers also say the surround sound is very good, and the attached microphone transmits your voice clearly.

Built for comfort. Most users at Amazon say the Astro Gaming A40 Audio System headphones fit quite comfortably. Although the 11.4-ounce headset "feels heavy in your hand," says one user, it's not fatiguing to wear, even for multi-hour gaming sessions. Multiple reviews say the headphones deliver just the right amount of pressure, so they stay put without clamping. The adjustable headband is well padded, and the ear cups are made from memory foam covered in a soft velour that doesn't overheat. They also swivel up to 90 degrees, so you can rest them against your shoulders for a break. The attached microphone can also swivel out of the way when it's not in use.

Customer service a letdown. The Astro Gaming A40 Audio System is the best-performing headset we've seen for console gaming. However, many reviewers at Amazon say the headphones' durability doesn't match its performance. Reviewers report a variety of malfunctions, ranging from a single loose screw to a completely nonfunctioning speaker in one ear. All of these problems should have been covered by Astro's two-year warranty, but users say customer support is nearly impossible to reach and often claims to be unable to fix problems even after you return the headphones for service.
