The 7.1-channel Onkyo TX-SR706 home theater receiver builds upon the very well-regarded Onkyo TX-SR606 (*Est. $400) by adding improved video upscaling (to 1080p) and an even more accurate Audyssey automatic speaker setup and room-equalization program. However, the most significant feature is its THX Select2 Plus certification, meaning this receiver is capable of delivering as-recorded sound at volume levels that are appropriate for a typical home theater where viewers are seated 10 to 12 feet away. If you have a bigger space to fill with sound, the Onkyo TX-SR806 (*est. $700) boosts power to 130 watts-per-channel and is THX Ultra2 Plus certified.

There are not a ton of reports on the Onkyo TX-SR706 home theater receiver, but Sound & Vision, a top reviewer when it comes to audio and video gear, offers a highly detailed write-up. Electronic House Magazine also includes it in a list of top home theater receivers under $1,000, as selected by contributors to AVSForum.com, a busy online community of audio and video enthusiasts. User reviews are still too limited to be useful, but a small handful can be seen at Amazon.com.

3. Amazon.com
