Clear, punchy audio. Experts say the 5.1-channel audio sounds great, with clear, well-placed audio effects that deliver a big enough bass punch to satisfy discerning listeners. Network streaming functions work, though there are no video conversion or scaling capabilities.
Streaming features and easy set-up. The Pioneer VSX-822-K has an easy-to use MCACC automatic speaker setup function; lossless audio formats; streaming music from iOS devices via a USB connection or AirPlay; and DLNA, web radio, podcast and Pandora streaming. The receiver doesn't include any wireless functions out of the box however, and the optional Bluetooth (*Est. $99) and Wi-Fi (*Est. $150) adapters are pricey.
In a word: BIG. The Pioneer VSX-822-K is a beast, with bulky knobs that only serve to emphasize its bulky overall size. It's attractive enough, however, though the button-filled remote control can be a bit much to take in. The optional ControlAV Android and iOS app is attractive and vastly simpler. The rear of the receiver boasts six HDMI inputs and several connectivity options, though the lack of composite video inputs may put off some.
Nothing special, either way. We've heard neither praise nor contempt for the receiver's interface, though the sheer number of buttons on the remote -- 61 -- can lead to extensive hunting for more niche controls.
Big bang for surprisingly few bucks -- if you don't need Wi-Fi. The Pioneer VSX-822-K sports excellent 5.1 audio, automatic calibration and deep networking options for a relatively low price. That advantage disappears if you need a wireless dongle, however. The one year warranty is half the length of the industry average, as well.
If you can get by without Wi-Fi or video processing, the Pioneer VSX-822-K is a solid midrange option that outshines budget receivers like the Yamaha RX-V373 (*Est. $250); if you're looking for a bit more, the Sony STR-DN1030 (*Est. $500) includes built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, video processing and an additional pair of speaker outputs for less than the cost of the Pioneer VSX-822-K plus a Wi-Fi adapter alone.

Very Good BigPictureBigSound doesn't review as many receivers as it used to, but this detailed review of the Pioneer VSX-822-K shows that the site hasn't lost its touch. Rachel Cericola comments on the lack of video processing, but she finds that the receiver excels in all other aspects. She especially loves the audio and the various network functions.

Fair Support for HD audio formats, an automatic setup option and numerous network streaming functions earn the Pioneer VSX-822-K a spot on this list, but Silva never mentions how the receiver actually sounds.
