Yamaha RX-V463BL

pros
  • HDMI capable
  • Automatic setup program
  • Scene modes
  • High power for this price class
cons
  • No on-board decoders for HD audio
  • No video upscaling

Given its price, performance and features, critics and users struggle to find many shortcomings with the Yamaha RX-V463BL. This 5.1-channel Yamaha receiver doesn't have built-in high-definition audio decoders, but it can accept LPCM audio sent via HDMI from Blu-ray players that have their own decoders. Connectivity is good, but there are only two HDMI inputs. The Yamaha receiver can't upscale video, but it can pass 1080p without a hitch. Convenient features include an automatic speaker setup and room-correction program. Preprogrammed and programmable scene modes make switching between tasks -- such as listening to an iPod or watching movies – much simpler. The 105 watts per channel provide plenty of pop for most mainstream home theater setups. The Yamaha receiver is XM- and Sirius satellite radio-ready; optional adapters for iPods and Bluetooth are available. If you have a little more to spend, the Onkyo TX-SR606 (*Est. $400) is also highly regarded and adds decoders for high-definition audio, twice as many HDMI inputs and more.

Home Theater magazine has the most complete review of the Yamaha V463BL, including formal bench testing and extensive hands-on evaluation. ConsumerGuide.com also weighs in, but its report is not nearly as detailed or helpful. User reviews, though limited, can be found at Amazon.com.

This review does a good job of describing the features of the Yamaha RX-V463BL home theater receiver, but testing is only hinted at. While the editors are clearly impressed, we'd be more comfortable with this review if we had a better sense of how they reached their conclusions.
