Experts say the 5.1-channel Klipsch HD Theater 500 is a terrific sounding speaker -- particularly with movies -- with the ability to create a more accurate surround-sound field than many of its competitors. The secret to that is a horn-loaded tweeter that "beams" high frequencies directly to the seating position without interacting with room acoustics as much as conventional designs. While some are not quite as enamored, most critics say music performance is pretty good. But the strength of the HD Theater 500 really comes through in movies with a sound field that's so convincing some might duck for cover when the action in a Hollywood blockbuster gets amped up.

Though the Klipsch HD Theater 500 is more than powerful enough to fill a small or moderate-sized room with sound, most say that these home-theater speakers are not quite up to the challenge of a larger space. Some praise the value, but others feel that these home-theater speakers are a little pricey. If you need to fill a big room with sound, the Onkyo SKS-HT540 (*Est. $295) could be worth a look. Though notably cheaper -- and notably larger -- the Onkyo system is also notably more powerful -- enough so to keep a good-sized party hopping all night.

The 5.1-channel Klipsch HD Theater 500 has been extensively reviewed. The best report is in Home Theater magazine, which backs its detailed hands-on report with a technical report from the test bench. CNET's report isn't quite as detailed, but is also testing based. The reports at Wired, EngadgetHD.com and DigitalTrends.com are also testing based, but briefer still.

1. Home Theater Magazine

Mark Fleischmann says that while the subwoofer is merely good for this class of home theater speakers the satellites in the Klipsch HD Theater 500 are among the best he's ever heard. Together, that equals a home-theater speaker system that outperforms many more-expensive options.

2. CNET

While Steve Guttenberg likes a now discontinued home-theater system a small amount more, he praises the performance of the Klipsch HD Theater 500, saying the system "prioritizes sound quality over cosmetic glitz." Performance is good for the most part with music, but it soars with movies. Bass is rated higher than at Home Theater magazine. One quibble is the use of spring-clip speaker connectors instead of more secure binding posts.

3. Wired.com

Though brief and breezy, this review of the Klipsch HD Theater 500 is backed by obvious testing. Music performance is great, but movies are where "these noisemakers really shined." The accuracy of the sound field is particularly complimented, and the reviewer adds that it is so realistic that it scared her dog. The most significant complaint is that setting up the subwoofer can be a chore for nonaudiophiles, though there's also some grousing that the price could be lower.

4. EngadgetHD.com

The Klipsch HD Theater 500 is praised for its ability to handle music and movies. Value takes a bit of a hit here as the reviewer states that some other good home theater systems are less expensive. The lack of any included extras -- even hookup wire -- is also a disappointment.

5. DigitalTrends.com

While some other reviewers complain about cost, DigitalTrends.com calls the Klipsch HD Theater 500 an "outstanding value." Some complaints are registered that the subwoofer struggles a bit with the lowest bass frequencies and that best results will likely be had in smaller rooms, but overall the home-theater speakers are said to deliver an "engaging home theater experience and a satisfying movie experience."
