If you're shopping for small speakers that can fill an average-size room with big sound for both movies and music, look no further than the Mirage MX 5.1. Despite the satellite speakers' size, the MX 5.1 can deliver surprisingly deep bass thanks to its diminutive yet powerful 800-watt subwoofer. Mirage's Omnipolar technology produces clear, clean sound from five tiny satellites, among the smallest of any home-theater system. But some reviewers say that while the surround-sound field is enveloping and convincing, it's also less focused, making it harder to precisely place specific sounds in movies and music. In addition, some trial and error might be needed to find the ideal placement for the speakers and sub. While the MX 5.1 is powerful for its size, best results will be limited to average-sized and smaller rooms up to about 300 square feet. Design is generally considered to be a plus. If you can deal with satellite speakers that are a little larger, the Definitive Technology ProCinema 800 (*Est. $1,200) is more expensive but does a better job of creating a well-focused surround-sound stage.

Steve Guttenberg gives the Mirage MX 5.1 a strong 4-star rating (out of 5). While he says the MX 5.1 delivers huge room-filling sound, he cautions that it's best for smaller areas of 300 square feet and less. He also says some owners might not like the less focused sound field these speakers produce.

While bulkier home theater speaker systems generally deliver more bang for the buck, reviewer Daniel Kumin says the Mirage MX 5.1 is a very tiny system that doesn't sound the part. Bass is surprisingly strong from the "amusingly small" sub. Setup -- particularly finding the right crossover frequencies between the satellites and subwoofer -- can be tricky. And even though the MX 5.1 sounds much bigger than it looks, it's still a better choice for smaller spaces than large ones.

Richard Stevens admits to having a preference for large speakers but says in the case of the Mirage MX 5.1, you can't judge a book by its cover. While it won't deliver the volume he prefers, the MX 5.1 will work well in most home situations, Stevens says.

Even though Mark Fleischmann considers the Mirage MX 5.1 to be a tad pricey, he says it's a good choice for rooms where speaker placement for a larger system could be a problem. Bass won't "rattle the windows," but it gets the job done -- the MX 5.1 sounds bigger than it looks even when called on to play challenging material.
