The Kenmore 15408 humidifier is a cool-mist model that outperforms others in at least one test; its humidistat allows the unit to maintain a preset target humidity level, and it can humidify up to 1,700 square feet. The humidifier has a double-fill system that owners say is convenient. Although this humidifier can output 8 gallons per day, the tank itself holds only 2.4 gallons, so it will need to be refilled two or three times daily. A display alerts you when it's time to refill the tank or replace the wick filter (*Est. $18). The average lifespan for the filters is 60 to 90 days. The downside with all cool-mist humidifiers is the ongoing cost of the replacement filters. The Kenmore humidifier gets consistently good reviews from owners, but if you don't want to spend so much, consider the smaller Honeywell HCM-630 (*Est. $50). The Honeywell humidifier holds less water (1.5 gallons) than the Kenmore and has a lower output (three gallons), so it won't cover as large an area.
