Humidifier Ratings
by Editors of ConsumerReports.org
Our AssessmentIn January 2011, ConsumerReports.org released its first report on humidifiers since 2004, testing 13 tabletop humidifiers and three console models. Results for all the humidifiers included in these tests are posted at ConsumerReports.org, although you need a subscription to view them. Models are rated on their moisture output, convenience, noise level, efficiency and performance when filled with hard water. There's also a buyer's guide that discusses humidifier types, features and brands, which can be viewed without a subscription.
The Best Humidifiers to Combat Dry Winter Air
by Editors of ConsumerReports.org
Our AssessmentThis entry in the Press Room section of ConsumerReports.org, which can be viewed without a subscription to the site, sums up the findings of the organization's latest report on humidifiers. The editors recommend the Safety 1st Ultrasonic 360 (*Est. $30) as a Best Buy, but they also note that this model can only cover a small area and does not include a humidistat. The article also compares different types of cool-mist humidifier -- evaporative, ultrasonic and impeller -- and notes that "performance varied widely for all types."

Humidifiers
by Editors of AllergyBuyersClub.com
Our AssessmentAllergyBuyersClub.com sells humidifiers and other health-related equipment, and the only ratings here are for models that the retailer carries -- mostly higher-end humidifiers from manufacturers like Air-O-Swiss, Pure Guardian and Stadler Form. It's clear that the editors have personally tested these models, and they provide a list of each humidifier's pros and cons. However, because the site's scope is narrow, we don't know how the many other brands of humidifiers stack up. The site also includes some reviews from users.
Claim Check: Venta-Airwasher "Humidicleaner"
by Editors of ConsumerReports.org
Our AssessmentConsumerReports.org tests the Venta-Airwasher LW 14 and LW 44 to check the manufacturer's claims that these humidifiers can filter and add moisture to the air. The results are reported in the blog section of the website, meaning that unlike much of the site's online content, they're available to anyone without a subscription.

Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonic Humidifier AOS 7144
by Michael S. Lasky
Our AssessmentReviewer Michael Lasky gives the Air-O-Swiss 7144 a score of 8 out of 10 in this review. He says he watched the Air-O-Swiss raise a room's humidity from 39 to 50 percent in less than half an hour (although he doesn't specify how big the room was). Lasky says this humidifier is "absolutely silent," and he appreciates its antibacterial features and sleep mode, which sets the machine to run for eight hours at a given humidity level. However, he notes that the process of refilling the tank is "somewhat clumsy."

Get Misty for Me: Humidifiers to Help You Through the Winter
by Laura Moser
Our AssessmentSlate.com's Laura Moser tests seven humidifiers in her own apartment, each for five 24-hour periods, and ranks the results with a numerical score based on performance, maintenance requirements and overall attractiveness. The Kenmore 15408, an evaporative humidifier, is the best performer of the lot, and Moser praises its double-fill water tank, which "cuts in half the number of times you have to stop life to schlep back and forth from the bathtub." She also gives high marks to the Honeywell HWM-450 warm-mist humidifier (discontinued), although she notes some personal reservations about this type in general. Though the write-ups on the individual humidifiers are not especially long, Moser does a good job describing the pros and cons of each humidifier, and the testing methodology and criteria are well explained.

Humidifier Reviews
by Contributors to Viewpoints.com
Our AssessmentOf the dozens of humidifiers listed at Viewpoints.com, most receive only one or two reviews, but a few receive a dozen or more. The best-rated of these is the Crane EE-5301 Cool Mist Humidifier. The reviews posted here are fairly detailed and worth a read.

Humidifiers
by Contributors to Amazon.com
Our AssessmentOwners rate their humidifiers with the usual mix of positive and negative comments. Among humidifiers with numerous postings, no models earn more than 4 stars on average. The Crane EE-5301 teardrop humidifier gets the largest number of positive reviews overall, followed by the Sunpentown SU-4010 and the Vicks 1200-6 Electric Steam Inhaler.

Best Humidifiers
by Editors of the Good Housekeeping Research Institute
Our AssessmentEngineers at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute scrutinize 21 room-size humidifiers, rating them on appearance, energy cost, user friendliness and how long the units take to humidify a room. Editors name the ultrasonic Air-O-Swiss 7144 as their "splurge-worthy pick." In the cool-mist category, the Honeywell HCM-300T is top-rated, and the Enviracaire Germ-Free EWM-211D (discontinued) is the top warm-mist pick. The article doesn't state how long humidifiers were tested, and does not reveal which models were tested other than the featured five. The write-ups on each humidifier are only two to four sentences long, but they do sum up each model's pros and cons.

Humidifiers
by Contributors to Target.com
Our AssessmentMost of the 50 or so humidifiers sold at Target.com have only a handful of reviews, but a few have many more, including several Crane tabletop models that get fairly strong average reviews. The Safety 1st Ultrasonic 360 is also popular with users. One humidifier, the Vicks V4500, gets especially poor overall ratings, with many complaints about mold buildup, white dust and noise.

Humidifier Reviews
by Contributors to Buzzillions.com
Our AssessmentBuzzillions.com has collected ratings and reviews of humidifiers from users at a wide variety of websites. The rankings on this site are puzzling, because products with large numbers of reviews and high average scores may appear below other products with fewer reviews and lower ratings. Another problem here is that the same model may appear several times under different names, making navigation tedious. Because the ratings at Buzzillions.com overlap with those taken from other sites used in our sources, we have relied on this site only as an additional source of user feedback for top-rated models.

Humidifiers and Vaporizers
by Vincent Iannelli
Our AssessmentPediatrician Vincent Iannelli, About.com's guide to pediatrics, recommends five humidifiers for children, though he doesn't refer to any testing in the brief write-ups. Three models from Vicks, one from Honeywell and one from Windchaser are recommended; however, only two of these five humidifiers are still on the market. Iannelli also warns parents to avoid warm-mist humidifiers to eliminate the possibility of a child being accidentally burned. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)

Humidifiers
by Editors of ConsumerGuide.com
Our AssessmentConsumerGuide.com's humidifier reviews don't offer much usable guidance. Discussion is brief and offers little that could not be gleaned from reading product literature. Although some of the models reviewed do appear to have been tested (based on references to noise level and the amount of time they take to humidify a room), it is not clear that all of them have been. Also, some of these reviews date back to 2004 or 2005, and none is more recent than 2007. Air-O-Swiss, Holmes and Hunter humidifiers are recommended, but it is not clear why these models were chosen when others get equally good ratings.
