The 2012 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid (Base MSRP: $34,755) is not only based on the 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid (Base MSRP: $28,775), reviews say -- it basically it copies word-for-word. The Lincoln's slightly nicer interior isn't enough to justify paying nearly $6,000 extra, critics say, and they seldom recommend it.
In its last model year before a full redesign, the 2012 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid sees no changes. It handles competently and accelerates briskly with its hybrid powertrain in tests. Its 39 mpg fuel economy trails less expensive hybrids like the 50-mpg 2012 Toyota Prius (Base MSRP: $24,000 to $29,805). Its 3-star government frontal crash rating lags behind other hybrids, too.
The less expensive 2012 Lexus CT 200h (Base MSRP: $29,120 to $31,750) also gets better gas mileage than the Lincoln -- 42 mpg overall. Among entry-lux hybrids, experts recommend the Lexus most often.
