We found the most recent comparison tests of the KitchenAid KICA0WH attachment at Cook's Illustrated, which tests seven inexpensive canister-style ice cream makers. Gourmet magazine compares it with nine other ice cream makers in a slightly older review, and we found more than 250 owner-written reviews and ratings, mostly at Amazon.com and Cooking.com.

The KitchenAid KICA0WH Ice Cream Maker Attachment adds a gel canister and paddle to your KitchenAid stand mixer. This lets you adjust the mixing speed to determine the texture of your ice creams and sorbets -- dense or fluffy. For the most part, however, reviews say this attachment makes airy ice cream, a texture some people like more than others. The attachment makes two quarts of ice cream in 15 to 20 minutes, but you must first freeze the gel bowl, which can take up a lot of space in the freezer. Owners say the attachment is easy to use. And it saves space and money to use the mixer's motor, but the attachment only works with specific models of KitchenAid stand mixers.

All 10 of the machines reviewed here make good ice cream, however, so the review says the choice comes down to other issues -- "price, storage space and ease of use."
