The best comparison review of the Lussino ice cream maker comes from Stephen Metcalf of Slate.com, who tests it along with six other machines using two different recipes. Gourmet tests 10 ice cream makers but provides less detail. We also found more than a hundred owner-written reviews and ratings of the Lussino at Amazon.com, Epinions.com and Cooking.com.

Reviews give top ranking to the all-stainless-steel Musso Lussino and say it makes richer, creamier French-style ice cream. It produces superb, highly aerated ice cream in 25 to 35 minutes. Unlike gel-canister makers, it has its own compressor, so it's ready for another batch immediately. It can also make slushy drinks such as frozen margaritas. It's powerful and relatively quiet but weighs almost 40 pounds and is very expensive. For a less-expensive compressor-style model, reviews point to the Cuisinart ICE-50BC (*est. $300).

2. Gourmet

Gourmet magazine reviews four gel-canister and six self-cooling ice cream makers, concluding that because all of them make good ice cream, it comes down to price, storage space and ease of use. The Musso Lussino gets good ratings for well-aerated, creamy ice cream, but so does the less-expensive Cuisinart ICE-50BC.
