Edy's Slow Churned Chocolate

Best light ice cream

Pros
  • Holds its own against full-fat ice cream
  • Fewer calories, fat than other light ice creams
Cons
  • Doesn't qualify as low-fat
  • Airy texture doesn't appeal to all tasters

Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned Chocolate is a clear standout among light chocolate ice creams and holds its own when compared directly against full-fat chocolate varieties. While Dreyer's/Edy's isn't technically classified as low-fat (such ice cream must contain 3 grams of fat or less, Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned Chocolate has 4), it contains less than half the fat and one-third the calories of the highly rated Häagen-Dazs Five Milk Chocolate (*Est. $4 per pint), which is touted for containing just five ingredients. Reviewers say Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned Chocolate has a silky texture, and many claim it's difficult to tell the difference between it and its full-fat competitors.

ConsumerReports.org conducts rigorous sampling of 13 vanilla and 11 chocolate ice creams, comparing both light and full-fat varieties against one another. Each brand, including Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned Chocolate, is ranked according to its taste appeal. Woman's Day takes a look at chocolate and vanilla light ice cream in a blind panel tasting, rating each on a scale of one to five. We also found feedback of Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned Chocolate from Good Housekeeping magazine, which samples eight light ice creams. Unfortunately, Cook's Illustrated magazine tests light vanilla ice cream, but not light chocolate.
