- Fast
- Good paper handling
- Good print quality
- Two input trays
- Slow duplex printing
- Slow photo printing
- Some reports of bad ink cartridges
February 2009. Reviews say the discontinued Canon Pixma iP4500 was the best budget-priced inkjet printer for general home use in its day (it was top-rated in our October 2008 report). Even some reviews of the newer and sleeker Pixma iP4600 (*est. $100) recommend buying an iP4500 because it is faster and cheaper to operate, although not every review agrees. Features on the older iP4500 include two paper input trays, direct printing from compatible digital cameras and automatic duplexing (printing on both sides of the paper). Experts are also pleased with print quality for photos, text and graphics. Tests show the iP4500 is speedy for most printing, but slow for photos and duplex printing. A few users report that they received bad ink cartridges; Canon issued replacements. Even less expensive is the Canon Pixma iP2600 (*est. $50), but this model comes in for criticism on build quality and has no way to print directly from a camera.
Canon Pixma iP4500 reviews are fairly plentiful. We found coverage at PC Magazine, TrustedReviews.com, PC World, PC Pro and more. Amazon.com and Newegg.com have lots of user reviews that offer some insight into real-world operation of the machine.

M. David Stone writes that the Canon iP4500 is a mild upgrade from the previous year's iP4300, but with a higher price tag. He says that print speed and quality is good across the board. The most significant criticism is that printing a full page of graphics makes the paper curl up.

The Pixma iP4500 inkjet printer's layout and operation are outlined in this review that also includes color photographs. Williams says print speeds are fine with the exception of duplex printing, which is "as fast as a snail pulling a hearse." Output quality is good.

3. PC Pro
In this short review, Dave Stevenson tests print speeds and evaluates print quality of the Canon Pixma iP4500. Because Canon builds-in drying time, speeds are a little pokey, even more so when duplex printing.
