- Ten inks mean very accurate colors
- Good text quality
- Relatively economical ink use
- Expensive
- Monochrome output could be better
- Slow
The Canon Pixma Pro9500 is the company's top inkjet photo printer. And while reviews like the results from the 10 pigment ink cartridges (with some minor complaints about glossies), there is disagreement about whether the price is worth it. Some reviews also say that monochrome photo printing isn't the best. Unlike a lot of photo-centric printers, the Canon Pixma Pro9500 fares well in printing text (as small as five points). But if text is your major concern, reviews say you could buy a cheaper, general-use printer such as the Canon Pixma iP4700 (*Est. $100). Reviews say that ink usage is relatively economical, but that the Pro9500 is slow.
We found the best review at PCMag.com, whose scoring system helps readers quickly see how printers rate. While PrinterInfo.com isn't as handy, the review is thorough and there is a helpful comparison with the Canon Pixma Pro9500's chief competition, the Epson Stylus Photo R2400. There are about 30 owner reviews at Amazon.com, a decent sampling given the Canon Pixma Pro9500's high price.

PCMag.com does extensive testing and is realistic in its assessments, naming the Canon Pixma Pro9500 an Editors' Choice despite being "notably slow." That's because on balance, the photo and graphics reproduction (plus text quality that's good as small as five points) far outweigh the drawbacks.
Review: Canon Pixma Pro9500, M. David Stone, July 5, 2007
This review offers very thorough testing and helpful recommendations. Reviewer Tom Warhol says those who are primarily interested in black-and-white prints will get better performance on them from the Epson R2400 for about the same price.
Review: Canon Pixma Pro9500 Photo Printer Review, Tom Warhol
Testing here is thorough, as good as other general-interest computer magazines'. The gist is that you'll get generally excellent prints (except the glossies are not great) and good ink-cartridge life, but the Canon Pixma Pro9500 is slow and downloading an updated driver is necessary to get the best color.
