Bottom line

Parents are unreserved in their praise for the K2 Marlee and K2 Raider, the girls' and boys' versions of these adjustable junior skates. They say they're comfortable, smooth and well-built enough to endure years of constant outdoor use. With a little practice, many children as young as 5 or 6 can put on and take off the skates themselves. The Marlee and Raider are available in three sizes, covering shoe sizes 11J to size 8.

A real skate for kids. Parents writing reviews of the K2 Marlee (girls' version) and K2 Raider (boys' version) on are universally thrilled with its comfort, fit and performance. "My daughter all of a sudden has more stability and control over her skates," writes one. Others say the skates are very comfortable, offer a smooth ride, and are easy enough for many 5- or 6-year-olds to take on and off themselves, although they may need some practice with the laces and ratchet ankle closure; there's also a hook-and-loop instep strap.

Plenty of room to grow. The K2 Marlee and Raider are available in three sizes -- small, which adjusts from sizes 11J to 2; medium, which spans sizes 1 to 5; and large, for sizes 4 to 8. Every size has K2's trademark soft boot and stability cuff. Reviewers are pretty evenly split on whether this skate runs true to size or as much as two sizes small, but either way they'll last -- a number of parents post reviews saying that the skates have been handed down two or three times and are still going strong.
